The Crazy Horse Memorial is a mountain monument in progress in the Black Hills of South Dakota that when complete will be the world's largest sculpture. The sculpture's final dimensions will be 641 feet wide and 563 feet high. By comparison, the heads of Mt. Rushmore are 60 feet high; the head of Crazy Horse will be 87 feet high. The monument is named after the Lakota warrior Crazy Horse who led the at the battle of Little Bighorn in 1876.
The carving on the mountain began in 1948 by sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski, who had worked on Mt. Rushmore under Gutzon Borglum. The monument is being carved out of Thunderhead Mountain on land considered sacred by some Native Americans. Crazy Horse Memorial is a nonprofit cultural and educational humanitarian project dedicated to the Native Americans of North America.
Crazy Horse Memorial is located in the Black Hills of South Dakota on US Highway 16/385 just 17 miles southwest of Mount Rushmore.
